Are collectible firearms such as C & Rs a good or a bad investment?

I'm talking more about harder to find pieces, such as an original condition SVT-40, an all-matching and original K98k or a Luger P.08, or similar C & R firearms that presently command a high dollar value.

Would these types of arms be a good store of value for the times we live in? Or forget them and just buy PMs?

Your thoughts?

Finding that person who will pay more for your firearm than you did, at some point years down the road...might prove to be difficult...like selling numismatic coins. And if SHTF only modern, practical, affordable firearms for hunting and defense, with easier to find parts, ammo, and accessories will be selling, IMO.

Re: Are collectible firearms such as C & Rs a good or a bad investment?

In the long run yes. When the country is booming again and people have disposable incomes to invest in hobbies like collecting absolutely.

Invest in them right now? I'd say no. Chances are your kids would make a great return on them, but I don't see most of us making any real return.

As the economy tanks disposable income goes out the window... not only will less people be buying, but more will be trying to sell to pay the rent or buy food.

In a couple years you'll be able to most of these guns for about the same price as a run of the mill version. Example, right now non-c&r P38's are $250 and C&r P1's are $500, basically double. In 2 or 3 years I don't see those c&r's going for anymore than a 10% premium over the going rate for P38's.

IMO if you looking to 'shelter' money in weapons related items go for the items that are currently depressed in prices, certain ammo like 5.45x39 or 7.62x25, magazines like $14.00 32-round factory IMI Uzi mags or ESPECIALLY the springfeild XD mags that go on sale from CDNN for 16 bucks from time to time, 'cheap' AK's like the hicap WASR's, the FEG PA-63 at 100 bucks NEW is a great gun, where else can you get a carry gun you can trust your life to for $100 (plus xfer and shipping)?

One reason I stress XD mags is that the XD is the new "gLock rage" (for good reason they are superior IMO we can talk about that in another thread though). Remember what happened in 1994? gLocks had only came mainsteam in the US for a few years and hicaps were going for 100 bucks! XD's have only been main stream for a couple years and if a new ban goes thru in the 36 months expect the $16 brand new 16 round stainless steel factory mags to atleast tripple if not go much higher. With SA introducing a new version of the XD (with a safety) it's going to open itself up to an even wider market.

Buy the nicer collectables from the money you'll make selling the mags/ammo/current cheap priced guns. Thats what I'm planning on doing ;)

I used to have a decent collection of C & Rs just a few years ago, but began cutting the herd down as I got more into PMs. I sold off the quantity in favor of quality, and the numbers fell even as the prices shot up. I don't have too much anymore and was asking this question because I was wondering if I should sell off some of the ones remaining, or even all of them.

Trouble is, what little I still have I dearly love, and it's hard for me to part with them knowing I won't find them again anytime soon, if ever.

I'm sorta' conflicted here. Pragmatism vs. passion, that type of thing.
I need help...:bear_sad:

In that case, don't buy anymore and keep what you have. I have certain firearms for personal collection reasons. Nothing wrong with that. Should things get bad, they'll always have value anyway and practical use as well.

I also think now is a bad time to be buying machine guns. The NFA market is going to take a big hit in the few years IMO.

If you enjoy owning them, keep 'em...I am just not sure of the marketability of C&R guns in the future. But, who knows? Maybe they are all people will be able to afford. Just make sure to buy plenty of ammo for them...
